Parent Involvement the Basics to Success

Parent Involvement where has it gone in the urban community? Better yet most homes that there's a hustle and bustle of energy passing in fleeting moments from one activity to the next. Have we forgotten what it takes to raise a village? Do we contend to let BET, MTV PS3 and American Idol raise our children? Are Tiger Woods, Charles Barkley and Brett Farve the role models we convey for our kids?

I say enough is enough and we as the parents of children need to be more involved in our children's educational process. Say NO to the casino and staring at the TV all night, and say yes to a more involved process for your child's growth and development…

Research about the impact of Parent Involvement is compelling. We know that when parents are involved in child's education, the benefits are:

•Higher test scores and grades

•Higher post-secondary enrollment

•Fewer behavioral concerns

•Fewer placements in special education

But I contend that this is the fabric that has been dovetailed for families for years but it seems like it has skipped 3 generations of some of the urban communities starting from what I call the "Babies Having Babies Era." We are dealing with the kids that parents where 1984-89 graduates that had children at a young age. Those children that were born then are having children that have started entering the educational settings between 2002-2005 so the cycle of non-mature, unguided and often mislead not by choice but by a negative hereditary cycle that does not present a stable safe environment for children to mature grow and be a productive part of society. "It's like the Blind leading the blind", i.e. Ray Charles following Stevie Wonder down the street just imagine that… Just something to think about!
